There are two categories for recipients: those who are just finishing their bachelor’s degree, and those who have recently completed their doctorate.

The scholarship is open to botanists from any country; however, there is a strong preference for students or post-docs from developing nations.

The competition consists of a written examination and an oral examination. The written exam tests knowledge of taxonomy, plant classification, plant geography and plant structure; while the oral exam focuses on teaching skills and imparting knowledge to future generations.
